A catabolic state is a state of the body in which energy is being spent. It is the state that the body gets into when spending energy, typically by exercising or performing any rigorous activity. Of course, it also depends on how much energy the body acquires. However, if you keep replenishing all the spent energy by continually consuming food intermittently with exercising, the body is bound to give in at some point. Therefore, it is essential to try and avoid the catabolic state.
How does the body get into a catabolic state?
If you have been overexercising or have recently shifted to a more intensive workout like in a boot camp, you either have to make your workout less intense or replenish your body with carbohydrates and other nutrients more regularly, even during workouts. This is not applicable for someone who has recently started working out and finds it taxing. This, however, goes for someone who is overambitious or impatient with his or her fitness goals and exercises more than that which is necessary. It might also be the result of the trainer's over enthusiasm and failure to understand the limits of the trainee. The outcome is a body that feels drained instead of energized(as energy is being lost). This leads to lethargy, weakness, strained muscles, joint pain and loss of sleep.
What can I do to avoid getting into a catabolic state?
Everybody has their specific limits and needs; no two people, despite similar gender, age and weight have the same body capacities. Even fraternal twins differ despite a similarity in genetic makeup. Therefore, it is best to know one's body in order to avoid getting into a catabolic state. Try to get a dietitian and a trainer to work together to assess your needs and limits. Be patient and steady with your fitness goals. If your trainer does not respond to your complaints, get a new trainer. Aggression is often encouraged in working out, but the most effective workouts like yoga depend more on quietude to get results. The simplest indication to judge is whether the aftermath of a workout leave you drained or uplifted. If it is the former, it is time to change some aspect of your workout.
How can I recover from falling into a catabolic state?
Emergency aids include seizing the physical activity and consuming some replenishing nutrients. Sipping orange juice or lemon juice is a great option as it not only contains glucose, but also has vitamin C which makes the immune system stronger. While it is best to exercise on an empty stomach, consuming a fruit like an apple or a banana prior to exercising and sipping on orange juice once in a while during a session is a good idea. However, never eat and drink so much that the body starts feeling heavy. This will prevent you from exercising well.
Exercise that leaves you weaker, unable to sleep(so that your body cannot rest and regain all that it has lost in a tiresome day) and wishing you didn't have to do it is ultimately punishing. Exercise should instead be a reward you give yourself through a fit body and an energetic mind.
